The increase of traffic through the Civitavecchia port, particularly the cruise ship
traffic foreseen for the Jubilee, requires the construction of new receiving
structures and upgrading of the historical port.
The triennial operational plan forecasts investments of more than five hundred
billion: three hundred for tourist and commercial port rationalization and
improvement, and another two hundred destined for the Petroli Dock.
The aim of the Port Authority is to salvage the istorical
port. Commercial
activities will be transferred to the norther part of the port and automotive and rail
traffic through the central parts of the city will be lightened. Another 1500 m of
docks will be constructed for merchant ships.
The most important dock for multi-use moorage will be located inside the outer sea
wall. Extension of the sea wall and construction of a new commercial dock is
planned.
The dock is to have an area of about 500,000 m2, 25,000 m2 will be ear-marked for
services and offices.
The silos will be transferred to an area zoned for commercial traffic, and in
their place, the new maritime station will rise up. Historical port areas will be
reserved exclusively for cruise ship mooring and island connections.
Fort Michelangelo, splendid example of renaissance
architecture that it is, will have a complementary function to the new maritime
station functions. The railways will also be involved in port
rationalization.
Completion of the north branch and communication between the port and the Rome-
Leghorn line, recovery and re-use of areas occupied by disused track, upgrading of the
Civitavecchia and Rome for frequent connections with fast trains; a logistics platform
serving the new multipurpose terminal are all planned.
